Development of planning to include opportunities for children to be able to measure and record their findings

Provide children with opportunities to be able to measure and record their findings on a termly basis

1.   Meet with Miss Bendall of Balcombe school, Leading Mathematics teacher in Sussex to review resources and planning

2.   Review medium term plans to ensure that opportunities are scheduled into each term for measuring length, weight and capacity.

3.   Plan such opportunities into other activities such as cooking, sand/water play and gardening.

 

Resources - audit current resources available for supporting teaching of measuring and recording findings

1.   Record a list of materials that Tiggers has to support both children and adults.

2.       Purchase additional resources as required.

3.        Source any additional materials needed

 

Environment - add a numeracy and literacy area to the environment for children to use in self initiated play as well as adult-led activities

1.   Make a plan of the area

2.   Create a display of resources including different media for measuring - both standard and non-standard units of measurement

 

 

 


Linking sounds and letters

Observations/assessment - to assess each child against the ‘stepping stones’ for linking sounds and letters

1.   Design activities which can be used to assess children’s abilities eg nursery rhymes. Record each child’s level of ability.

2.   Use the assessments to inform planning in order to meet each child’s needs.

3.   Implement planned activities

4.   After 3 months re-assess abilities to feed into planning.

 

Provide children with opportunities to develop their understanding of linking sounds and letters on a daily basis

1.   Meet with class teacher in Foundation Stage class to review practice/resources/planning/observations

2.   Use the National Literacy Strategy section on Progression in Phonics to inform planning

3.   Review daily timetable to ensure that opportunities are scheduled into the daily routine

4.   Work with children in smaller differentiated groups (3-6 children) as well as larger groups

2.      Review resources in Reception class or feeder school with a view to borrowing resources or making purchases.

3.      Visit local library for materials which Tiggers could borrow.
