Broadband in Balcombe

In November 2002, the webmaster launched the campaign to get broadband for Balcombe.

BT were requested to install ADSL in the village. This involves modifying the local exchange. They advised us to collect as many potential signups as possible. Petition forms were placed in the local shops and pub. Eventually we collected in excess of 250 signatures.

Some villages were being connected with only 200 signatures, so we felt confident that Balcombe would be approved by BT. However, all communications with BT were negative; they finally stated that Balcombe would never get broadband due to the low interest.

In view of this, LTT were contacted, an international wireless broadband company intending to expand into the UK. The webmaster delivered leaflets to most households in Balcombe; these were printed for free by the Village Stores, and explained the choice between BT and LTT. Residents were invited to shoose between LTT now or BT possibly later. Residents could respond by returning the leaflet or completing an online form. LTT was the overwhelming favourite. The discussion forum proved most useful in sharing information and ideas, and making announcements.

Preliminary negotations with LTT were commenced and it appeared that they would be installing wireless broadband imminently. However, LTT never delivered on their promises.

Curiously, BT suddenly decided to reverse their decision and announced they would install broadband here after all! I wonder why? Could it be that they heard about LTT? Or did someone from BT move to Balcombe? We'll never know.

ADSL broadband was installed in November 2003.
